Fall Classic Recap - September 25th, 2012

The Major League Baseball regular season is coming to a close, but by no means is it going to be an easy road for most teams.  I wasn’t sure what to think of the two Wild Card playoff spots at the start of the season, and I will admit it needs some tweaking, but it has made for an exciting (and stressful) final few weeks of the season.  Baltimore is sitting on top of the AL Wild Card, but with 4 teams nipping at their heels, they are a bad week of baseball away from missing the playoffs.  I’m excited to see how the next few weeks pans out, and to see how the dual wild card pans out.

Big League Dreams

9-Under:
The Orangecrest Crush entered Sunday as the 3rd Seed because of an 11-11 tie on Saturday.  They intended to show why they should have been the first seed on Sunday.  After upsetting the 2nd Seed, they advanced to the finals to face the 1st Seed So Cal Outlaws.  Both teams fought hard, but the crush were able to sneak past the Outlaws 8-6

10-Under:
The So Cal Outlaws grabbed the 1st Seed in the 10-Under as well.   They advanced to the Championship game with an 11-4 Semifinal win, but would they be able to have a different outcome from the 9-Under team?  In the other Semifinal game, 2nd Seed BP Roadrunners advanced to the finals with a 9-1 win.  BP Roadrunners and Outlaws went toe to toe, and the Roadrunners were able to squeeze that extra run for a 7-6 victory.

11-Under:
4th Seed ISC National Blue made an impressive run on Sunday.  After a stressful 10-9 Quarterfinal game, they took their momentum, and were able to upset the 1st Seed 8-3 to advance to the finals.  They would, however, have to face the team that handed them their loss on Saturday.  Beach Cyclones went 2-0 on Saturday, and entered Sunday as the 2nd Seed.   Both teams were on their third game of the day, but Beach Cyclones were able to keep their bats alive, and walked away with the 1st Place trophy

12-Under:
The 12-Under was another matchup between the 1st and 2nd Seeds in the Championship game.  South Bay Surf and Manhattan Beach Heaters both advanced to the finals with close one-run victories in their Semifinal games.  Manhattan Beach took advantage of their game break and came out swinging.  They swung their way to an 8-0 victory.

13-Under Red:
Once again the 1st and 2nd Seeds met in the finals, and once again the 2nd Seed was able to overtake the 1st Seed.  So Cal Redwings gave up just 5 runs on Saturday, giving them the 1st Seed on Sunday.  A close 8-7 semifinal victory may have depleted their energy a little, though, as the Dirt Dawgs came out swinging and came away with a 14-4 Championship victory.

13-Under Blue:
The Pasadena Stars had to beat a pair of Ruffnecks in Sunday’s playoff games.  The 2nd Seed Stars faced the Ruffnecks Red in the Quarterfinal game.  A 7-1 victory sent them to the Semifinals.  They scored seven more runs, and advanced to the Championship game where they would have to face Ruffnecks Black.  The Stars, deciding to stick with lucky number 7, held off the Ruffnecks Black for a 7-6 victory.

14-Under:
Team Victory’s name was very appropriate for the weekend.  Going 3-0 in Pool Play, they advanced to the Championship game as the 1st Seed.  Facing X Baseball again, they were able to repeat the outcome of their first meeting with a win, and a 1st Place trophy

10-Under:
2nd Seed Phoenix Baseball had a long hard road ahead of them on Sunday.  Being a seven team bracket, that meant any team other than the 1st Seed would have to win 3 straight games to clinch first place.  Phoenix was up to the task.  After a quarterfinal win, they had to face fellow undefeated team House of Hardball Hitmen.  Their bats stayed hot and their pitchers stay calm as they advanced with a 10-2 win.  On the other side of the bracket, 1st Seed HB Scrappers also advanced to the finals with a 10-2 victory.

Phoenix, now on their third game of the day, did not let that slow them down.   They came out swinging and put up 5 runs in the top of the 1st Inning.  The Scrappers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, followed by two more in the bottom of the second.  That would be as close as the game would get though.  Phoenix scored four runs in the top of the third, and would go on to win the game 12-5.

11-Under:
Sunday’s games were home to two upsets, and one exciting finish to the Championship Game.  Los Al Stampede upset the 1st Seed from Pool B, and HB Bombers upset the 1st Seed from Pool A.  Both teams, on their third games of the day, were running thin on pitching.  The Bombers struck first with one run in the bottom of the first inning.  The Stampede responded with two runs in both the second and third innings.  Bombers came right back and scored three to tie it 4-4 in the bottom of the third, then three more in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 7-4.  Stampede wasn’t licked yet though.  They tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the sixth.  After holding the Bombers in the sixth, the game went to extra innings.  Stampede kept their momentum barreling forward with four more runs in the top of the seventh.  The Bombers were unable to respond in kind, and the Stampede took home an exciting extra innings championship.

12-Under:
The HB Nitro came into the tournament knowing that it was theirs all the way.  Giving up zero runs on Saturday, they gave up only four on Sunday in their 4-0 undefeated run to first places.
