Indian Summer Classic Recap - September 18th, 2012

Hart Pony, Santa Clarita
The Indian Summer Classic took us to a new location in Santa Clarita.  Hart Pony’s facilities are right down the street from Six Flags Magic Mountain, and have been hosting teams for many years now, including our Mustang All-Star team 18 years ago.  Local teams jumped at the opportunity to play close to home, and the weather may have been hot, but bats were even hotter on the field.

9-Under:
With three 2-1 teams in a four team division, the 9-Under was an incredibly close division.  The top two seeds met in the Championship game on Sunday afternoon.  The game would be a rematch of the first game of the tournament.  So Cal Bees had bested Mid Valley Elite 14-9 on Saturday morning, but Mid Valley Elite came back strong after that.  Winning their next two Pool Play games in convincing fashion, they reunited with the team that handed them their only loss.  That brought us to the exciting Championship game.

It was a back and forth game, until the Bees put up 4 runs in the top of the fourth to make the game 8-4.  Mid Valley would respond with four of their own in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 8-8.  The Bees scored the go ahead run in the next inning to make it 9-8.  Mid Valley wasn't done yet though.  They scored the tying run in the bottom of the sixth, sending the game to extra innings.  In the bottom of the seventh, they were able to score the go ahead run, and win the game 10-9.

12-Under:
The 12-Under saw a Championship between the two powerhouse teams for the weekend.  Both Storm Baseball and SC Hawks gave up only five runs on Saturday, and gave up no runs in their Semifinal games on Sunday.  Both teams were very evenly matched, however there could only be one winner.  Storm Baseball saved their best pitching for last, and was able to with the Championship with a shutout win.

13-Under:
Sunday once again held no upsets or surprises for us in the 13-Under division.  1st Seed SC Coyotes and 2nd Seed Thousand Oak Bulldogs only gave up 5 runs combined in 6 Games leading up to the Championship game.  The Bulldogs were able to keep their bats hot for one more game, and walked away with a 7-1 Championship Victory.

Birdsall Park, Temecula
At the other end of Southern California, we had a full park of teams in Temecula.  It may have been 100 miles away, but the temperatures were still in the 100’s, and the teams were ready to play.

10-Under:
It’s never ideal to run a tournament with only three teams, but when all three teams just want to play baseball, it always works out.  Stallions BBC was on their game all weekend, going 4-0 and only giving up 13 Runs.  At the end of Sunday, they had the best record, and took home the First Place trophy.

11-Under:
The BC Prospects and Xtreme BBC met in the Championship game for the second time in the weekend.  The Prospects had given Xtreme their only loss leading up to the Championship game, and Prospects were able to repeat that outcome in the Championship game.  A 7-1 victory gave them the Championship trophy to take home.

12-Under:
Another matchup between 1st Seeds took place in the 12-Under, but it wasn’t as cut and dry as others.  Pool A had three teams that all went 1-1 on Saturday.  This meant seeds would have to be determined by Runs-Allowed rather than record.  3rd Seed Montebello Mayhem beat the 2nd Seed (who had beat them on Saturday), to face 1st seed Xplosion, (Whom they had beaten on Saturday).  Xplosion then got their payback with a 6-2 win to advance to the finals.  San Diego Dukes were waiting for Xplosion in the finals though.  After battling to win their Semifinal game, they had a game break.  They took that time to regain their composure and win the Championship Game 10-1.

13-Under:
Seven team brackets is one of the most crucial times to clinch the 1st Seed.  They are the only team that get a bye game on Sunday, otherwise teams have to win three games in a row to win the tournament.  Corona Cougars on the other hand, used that as motivation.  Going 2-0 on Saturday, but coming in at the 2nd Seed due to runs allowed, they cruised through their quarterfinal game.  They had to battle 3rd Seed T2 Black for an 11-8 win to advance to the finals.  Now on their third game of the day, and running low on pitching, they were able to keep their bats hot to outscore the 1st Seed 13-10 in a slugfest Championship Game.

Thank you to all the teams that played last weekend.  Here is a list of the Champions and Runner Ups.

See you on the fields
