Irish Recap

Green Shirts, blue skies, and warm temperatures made for a beautiful March weekend of baseball in both the coastal cities of San Clemente, and Huntington Beach.

Huntington Beach:
With a four game guarantee tournament, rather than a traditional Sunday Playoffs, each team played every team in their bracket, before the Top Two Seeds advanced to the Championship game.  While this ensured that the two best teams from the weekend would play for the championship, it eliminated any chance for an underdog to fight their way through the playoff brackets.  Each Pool Play game was crucial in the amount of runs given up, runs scored, and how much pitching was used.

While the Championship was always the 1st and 2nd Seeds, the 1st Seed didn't necessarily win each time.

10-Under:
In the 10-Under tournament, the SGV Hustle finished out Pool Play 4-0, advancing as the 1st Seed in the Championship.  In their first Pool Play game of the day, they beat another 2-0 team, the Irvine Knights.  Now 2-1, the Knight would need a win to advance to the Championship game.  It wasn't pretty, but the Knights secured a 9-8 win to go 3-1, and advance to the Championship as the 2nd Seed.

Now up against the SGV Hustle for the 2nd time in one day, the Knight were ready for them.  Despite scoring 31 runs in their last two games, the Hustle were unable to replicate that offense for a third game.  Knights pitching shut down the potent Hustle offense, leading to a 6-0 Knights victory.

12-Under:
In what became a very crucial Sunday of Pool Play games, the battle for 2nd and 3rd Seed came down to just a few runs.  After going 1-0-1 on Saturday, the Dirt Dawgs lost a tough 11-9 game to the eventual 1st Seed, Redondo Sunset.

Despite having the same record as the 3rd Seed, the Dirt Dawgs gave up four less runs across the three Pool Play games, advancing them as the 2nd Seed.  Now playing the Sunset for a 2nd game on Sunday, the Dirt Dawgs were rested and ready.  They shut down Sunset's offense with stellar pitching, giving up no runs while scoring 10 of their own to take 1st Place with a 10-0 shutout.

Thank you to all the teams that played in the Irish.  Here is a list of the Champions and Runner-Ups.

See you on the fields
