Holiday Classic Recap - December 27th, 2012

The holidays are behind us.  Hopefully you were able to spend as much quality time with family and friends as we were able to.  The last two years had Christmas and New Years falling on a weekend, so we had two weeks of no baseball at the end of each year.  This year finds us playing right before Christmas and New Years again.  The tournaments may be smaller, but the level of ball being played is still high caliber.

10-Under:
Sunday's playoff bracket unfurled like no one planned.  Phoenix Baseball and Mutts both entered Sunday as the 2nd Seeds of their respective pools.  After winning their quarter final games, they both advanced to face the 1st Seeds of each other's pools.  Mutts faced the 2-0 San Pedro Pirates.  Already having a game under their belts on the day, they were able to hold the Pirates to just 3 runs and advance to the Championship with  a 5-3 win.  In the other semi-final game, Phoenix Baseball kept their bats alive. Scoring 15 runs in their first game, they scored 16 in their semifinal game to advance to the Championship.  They kept those bats hot, scoring 8 runs in the Championship for an 8-6 win, and an early Christmas Present.

14-Under:
The 14-Under tournament was another 6 Team tournament that played out strikingly similar to the 10-Under tournament.  In Pool A, all three teams went 1-1, leaving the seedings up to who gave up the least runs.  IHN Warriors came in as the 2nd Seed, despite beating the 1st Seed in Pool Play (and that's why it's important to minimize your Runs Allowed).  Not happy that they finished behind the team they beat, they were looking forward to facing them again.  They won their quaterfinal game by scoring 12 runs.  In their semifinal game, they faced the 1st Seed from the opposite pool.  They only scored 5 runs, but were able to hold them to just 3 runs, advancing them to the Championship.

They wouldn't be facing the 1st Seed from their pool though (they lost their Semifinal game).  On their third game of the day, their bats weren't ready to quit just yet.  Putting up 10 runs, they won the Championship game comfortably 10-2.

Thank you to all the teams that played in the Holiday Classic.  We wish you and your families a happy and safe new years.  We'll see you again in 2013!

Here is a list of the Champions and Runner Ups.

See you on the fields
