Veterans Day NIT Recap - Nov 14th, 2012

Before we get onto our recap, let's take time to remember why we are able to play baseball year round.  The countless sacrifices by the men and women given to protect this country.  Grandparents, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, friends, all have been affected in one way or another by this country's servicemen and women.  Us at USSSA Southern California thank you all with every part of our being for the sacrifices you have made to let us do something as minor as playing baseball on a beautiful November weekend.

Big League Dreams
10-Under AAA:
"Doesn't matter if you win by an inch, or a mile.  Winning is winning."  Rampage BBC took this to heart for the weekend.  Winning both games on Saturday by just one run, they entered Sunday as the 1st Seed.  Their one run victories didn't end there though.  Winning their Semifinal game 5-4, they advanced to the finals to face Los Pegadores.  Los Pegadores had lost to the 2nd Seed on Saturday, but was able to get payback and advance to the finals.  Los Pegadores hit the ball, but Rampage swung the bats a little better, and walked away with a 7-6 victory, their fourth one run victory of the weekend.

10-Under AA:
Despite swinging the bats on Saturday, the Lakewood Dodgers couldn't catch any breaks.  They entered Sunday 0-2 as the 3rd Seed of Pool A.  Sunday was a new day though.  They got their defense buttoned down and continued to stay hot at the plate.  They upset the 2nd Seed from Pool B to advance to the Semifinals.  They would have to face the 1st Seed from Pool A, who had beaten them 8-4 on Saturday.  The Dodgers were up for the challenge though, and scored 8 runs of their own in an 8-0 shutout to advance to the finals.

The other side of the bracket had it's own upsets taking place.  The Predators had similar issues on Saturday.  They hit the ball, but gave up too many runs in their two Saturday games.  Coming into Sunday as the 3rd Seed from Pool B, they upset the 2nd Seed from Pool A, and like the Dodgers, had to face the 1st Seed from their pool in the Semifinal game.  The Predators were ready, and a 12-5 upset sent them to the finals.

Both teams were on their third game of the day.  Despite fighting hard, the Predators pitching couldn't cool down the Dodgers bats.  The Dodgers put up 11 runs in their exciting playoff run to the Championship

11-Under AAA:
Payback was the first thing the So Cal Cobras were faced with on Sunday.  They entered as the 3rd Seed due to a 5-3 Saturday loss to the So Cal Quakes.  Their first game was against the 2nd Seed Quakes, and they flipped the tables on them.  A hard fought game, So Cal Cobras won 5-3 in a crucial Semifinal game.  They advanced to the finals to play 1st Seed HB Vikings.  Feeling strong after their upset of the 2nd Seed, the Cobras came back and upset the 1st Seed with a nail biting 6-5 victory to take home first place.

12-Under Red:
Some play off brackets go exactly as you'd expect, with the 1st and 2nd Seeds playing in the Championship game.  Others remind us why baseball is such an unpredictable sport.  The Gold Bracket on Sunday had Seeds 1-4 battling it out for the top spot.  The first game of Sunday was between 2nd Seed Predators, and 3rd Seed South Bay Surf.  Predators were 2-0 on Saturday, and the Surf were 1-0-1.  South Bat Surf hit the ground running, and put up 15 runs to advance to the finals.  The second game of the day was between 1st Seed So Cal Outlaws and 4th Seed Vicious BBC.  The Outlaws had shut out Vicious on Saturday 5-0 in the first game of the day.  Vicious was not going to be caught off guard again, and shut out the Outlaws to advance to the finals.  Facing South Bay Surf in the finals, the game was tightly matched.  Battling back and forth, South Bay Surf was able to take a one run lead, and win the game 5-4.

13-Under Red:
The 5th Seed BC Prospects were set on doing to the unexpected right off the bat on Sunday.  In their Quarterfinal game, they upset the 4th Seed with a 5-2 victory.  Advancing to the Semifinals, they faced the 1st Seed with no intentions of slowing down.  Giving up just two runs again, they advanced to the Championship with a 4-2 victory.  Facing the 2nd Seed in the Championship game, they once again gave up only two runs in their epic run from the 5th Seed to tournament champions.

13-Under AA:
The Alta Loma Yankees were not going to let their 6th Seed position dictate their level of play in Sunday's games.  Upsetting both the 2nd and 3rd Seeds, they found themselves in the championship game against the 1st Seed.  Not holding back, they scored 13 runs in an upset that no body saw coming, except for the Yankees of course.

Huntington Beach Sports Complex:
The rain was nice enough to stay away for us in Huntington Beach.  After getting considerable rain during the week, we got two dry days, which was more than enough to let the fields dry out for the weekend.  It may have been windy and a little brisk, but we were playing baseball.

10-Under:
The ELB Thunder had an exciting Sunday.  After entering Sunday as the 5th Seed, they upset the 4th Seed in the Quarterfinal, and then upset the 1st Seed to advance to the Championship.  There, they would face the HOH Hitmen.  The Thunder battled hard, but the Hitmen were able to duplicate the result from Saturday's matchup, and take home a 7-4 victory.

11-Under:
The 11-Under Championship was a clash of the titans.  The 1st Seed from both Pool A and Pool B met in the finals.  The Bat Rays found themselves entering the bottom of the 6th inning with a razor thin 4-3 lead.  With two outs, and a runner on second, the Bombers hit a ball in the gap.  Rounding third, Bomber's 3rd Base coach waved him home.  The Bat Rays Outfielder let the ball fly, and it bounced into home plate right before the sliding runner.  The catcher pulled it down, and got the tag on his body before his foot reached the plate.  It took all the way to the last at bat for the Bat Rays to pull out this stressful victory.

Thank you to all the teams that played in Huntington Beach this weekend.  Here is a list of the Champions and Runner Ups.

See you on the fields
