July 3rd, 2012 - Firecracker NIT Recap

Weekend Recap 7-3-12

Firecracker NIT – June 30th – July 1st, 2012

7-Under:
The 7-Under Chino Hills Thunder is always playing up in 8-Under tournaments, and if they’re not winning them, they’re giving the older boys a run for their money.   If they do that well in the older division, then you know they’re going to do well in an actual 7-Under tournament.  In their first three pool play games, they didn’t give up a single run, and even though they gave up 4 runs in the championship game, they scored 20, giving them the first place trophy.  We will be seeing the Thunder in championship games for years to come.

8-Under:
Sunday’s Gold Division had some of the best 8-Under programs in the country, all playing against each other in one place.  Los Al Pony and Irvine Pony brought their strong All Star teams to play against, Easton Elite, Oakley Stingrays, and Tomateros.  With teams of that caliber, greats were guaranteed.  3rd Seed Oakley Stingrays upset 2nd Seed Tom to advance to the championship game, and 1st Seed Easton Elite was able to hold off the surging Los Alamitos All Stars.  Both teams in the finals were undefeated, and Easton Elite was able to keep the momentum going, and walked away with an 8-0 win.

9-Under:
3rd Seed Rampage went into Sunday ready to get payback.  In their semifinal game, they faced undefeated 2nd Seed Oakley Stingrays Black.  They battled hard, and after a hitter’s duel, Rampage walked away with a 12-10 victory.  1st Seed Los Pegadores had a tight game with a different Rampage (From Los Al).  Pegadores were able to keep their undefeated record alive with a close 9-8 win.  That would put Los Pegadores against Ramage in the finals.  Los Pegadores had beaten Rampage on Saturday, and Rampage wasn’t going to let that happen again.  Both teams, tired from their previous tough games, battled hard, but Rampage was able to win 4-2, securing the upset, and some sweet payback.

10-Under:
BPA Rawlings showed why they are going to be representing Southern California at the Elite World Series in Florida this year.  Giving up just 1 run all weekend while scoring 38, they cruised to an easy first place victory.  We know these guys are going to make us proud in Florida.

10-Under – BLD Perris:

We returned to the beautiful complex at Big League Dreams Perris this weekend for a handful of divisions.  The 10-Under was incredibly evenly matched.  Every team had at least one win, and no pool play game was won by more than 6 runs.  On Sunday morning in their final pool play game, Storm Elite beat the 2-0 Inland Dukes to clinch a championship spot against them later that afternoon.  Inland Dukes were not going to let that happen again though, as their bats woke up, leading them to a 10-2 win.

11-Under:
The So Cal Defenders Black are a hitting team. Every tournament they play, they are always putting up huge offensive numbers.   This weekend was no different.  They may have given up 13 runs in their four games this weekend, but they put up 40 in their undefeated run to the championship.

11-Under Perris:
Pool B of this 6-Team division dominated Sunday’s Playoff games.  3rd Seed of Pool B Menifee Mayhem upset 2nd Seed of Pool A in the semifinal game.  They would advance to face Temecula Gamerz, who had beaten them on Saturday, and were the 1st Seed of Pool B.  On the other side of the bracket, Pass Heat, the 2nd Seed of Pool B, beat the 3rd Seed of Pool A to face Xplozion.  Xplozion, the 1st Seed of Pool A, had only given up 2 runs on Saturday, but Pass Heat wasn’t going to let that intimidate them.  Both teams battled, but Pass Heat was able to upset Xplozion 9-7 to advance to the finals.  Temecula Gamerz would stop them there, and repeat the outcome of their matchup on Saturday with a win, and finished off their undefeated weekend with a first place trophy.

12-Under:
The So Cal Redwings had one goal in mind this weekend, and they never looked back.  They didn’t give up a single run all weekend in their run to another first place trophy.

12-Under Perris:
The 12-Under Championship in Perris was a rematch between the afternoon game on Saturday.  T2 Black clinched 1st Seed of Pool A with a Saturday win over Crusaders.  Crusaders fought their way through their quarterfinal game, upset the 1st Seed from Pool B to get to the championship game against T2 Black.  Crusaders fought hard, but in the end, T2 edged them out 6-5 to take home the trophy.

13-Under:
With 18 teams, the 13-Under division was one of the biggest single bracket that we’ve run in a long time.   The Gold Division playoffs on Sunday had four undefeated teams playing in the semifinal games.  1st Seed Long Beach All Stars and 2nd Seed Westlake Coyotes advanced to the finals with their semifinal wins.  Westlake Coyotes kept their momentum going with a win over Long Beach.  Westlake Coyotes are headed to the Elite World Series in August, and once again, we know they are going to doing great.

16-Under:
Very rarely do we have enough teams in any divisions over 14-Under to have a tournament, so when we have enough teams it’s always exciting.  Desert Baseball and Stampede headed into the final on Sunday afternoon.   Stampede had bested Desert Baseball in their final pool play game on Sunday.  They turned right back around and played each other in the Championship.  Desert Baseball was able to turn it around and won 13-8 to take home the championship.

Thank you to all the teams that played this weekend.  Here is a list of the Champions and Runner Ups.
