July 10th, 2012 - Independence Recap

Independence – July 7-8, 2012

8-Under:
The 8-Under tournament saw a lot of fresh faces this weekend.  In Sunday’s playoff games, TABB Red met up with Park Bums again.  On Saturday, these two teams had met in their second games, but ended in a 6-6 Tie.    In Sunday’s game, there had to be a winner though, and TABB Red stepped up, upsetting the higher ranked Park Bums.  Heading into the Championship game, TABB Red faced the only undefeated team, So Cal Mulisha.  After a hard fought game, TABB Red took home a win with a 7-6 upset.

9-Under:
With just four teams in the 9-Under, every team was going to play each other once before the Championship game on Sunday.  When the BP Roadrunners met the Warriors on Sunday morning, they gave the Warriors their first loss.  They turned right back around and faced each other in the Championship game.  BP Roadrunners kept their perfect weekend alive with a win and took home the 1st Place trophy

10-Under:
A healthy mix of Travel Teams and All-Star teams met up in the 10-Under division this weekend.  The Semifinals were made up of two Travel Teams, and two All-Star Teams.  The 2nd Seed ELB All-Stars were having a rematch of a game on Saturday with 3rd Seed Die Hards.  Die Hards was not going to let ELB Hand them another loss, and squeaked out a 9-8 win to head to the championship.  In the other semifinal game, 1st Seed OC Sundevils kept their perfect weekend alive with a win over the Fountain Valley A All Star team.  OC Sundevils were able to hold off the surging Die Hards, albeit only by one run, in their 5-4 Championship victory.

11-Under:
Manoa Storm made the trek all the way from Hawaii for the Holiday weekends, and to play some Southern California baseball.  The Independence tournament was their second weekend in a row, and they missed the Gold Bracket by just one run.  We want to thank the Storm for making the long and expensive trip out to California to play with us.

In the Gold Bracket, VSA Vipers clinched the 1st Seed by giving up only 4 runs on Saturday.  They kept that great defense going on Sunday, giving up just 3 runs in two games to go undefeated  all weekend, and clinch the 1st Place trophy.

12-Under:
Visalia is about four hours away from Big League Dreams West Covina.   The Visalia All Stars came down to us with nothing other than victory in their sights.  After a win and a 3-3 tie on Saturday, they clinched the 4th Seed in the Gold Bracket on Sunday, meaning they would have to win three straight games to take home first place.  They cruised through their quarter final game to advance to the semifinals where they would have to take on 1st Seed ABD Aztecs.  They kept their composure, and walked away with a 5-1 upset to head into the finals.

On the other side of the bracket was West Covina Red Assault.  They were on the other end of that 3-3 tie on Saturday.  After winning a close quarter final game, they advanced to face the 2nd Seed Rox Black.   A hard fought game led to a 9-5 upset for West Covina.  They would advance to face Visalia All Stars for the second time.  Visalia was able to keep their momentum going, and walked away with a 9-1 win for their long drive back home.

13-Under:
The Gold Bracket in the 13-Under Playoffs on Sunday did not go according to play.  In both semifinal games, the higher seed was upset.  3rd Seed Agoura Thunder upset the 2nd Seed, and 4th Seed Riverside Riot upset the 1st Seed.  Both Riverside Riot and Agoura Thunder not only tied in their game on Saturday, they also tied in every tie breaker to determine higher seed and had that had to be decided by a coin flip.  To say these teams were evenly matched would be an understatement.  Both teams fought hard in the championship, but Agoura Thunder was able to squeeze out a 3-0 victory.

Thank you to all the teams that played in the Independence tournament, especially those from out of town.  Here is a list of the Champions and Runners Up
