While rest of the country was dealing with snow and low temperatures, the Frozen Fury in Southern California was a bit of a misnomer. With temperatures in the 70s, it was a perfect weekend for some baseball.
9-Under:
In the last game of Pool Play on Saturday, the Dirt Dawgs lost to the eventual 1st Seed Colts, dropping them down to the 4th Seed headed into playoffs. After winning their first playoff game in an exciting 11-10 win, they advanced to face the 1st Seed Colts for the 2nd time in 4 games. This time around though, they didn't give the Colts a chance, pounding the ball and putting up 22 Runs to advance to the Championship game with a combination upset and payback.
Now up against the 2nd Seed Hawks, the Dirt Dawgs were looking to repeat their Saturday performance. The Dawgs had held off the Hawks in a high scoring Pool Play game. Doing just enough to edge out the surging Hawks, the Dirt Dawgs held on to a 9-8 victory to take home 1st Place.
10-Under:
Finishing 2-0 on Saturday, the 10-Under OC Hawks advanced to the Championship game, just like their 9-Under counterparts. Now up against the Santa Ana Savage, the OC Hawks had their work cut out for them. Even though the Hawks had beaten them on Saturday, it was a tough 1-Run win.
The Savage didn't make this game any easier. Battling back and forth the entire game, the evenly match teams needed extra innings to decide a winner.
Finally getting some runners on base in the 8th Inning, the Hawks drove a ball to the grass, bringing in the winning run and completing their undefeated weekend.
13-Under:
In Pool Play, defense plays just as important roll, if not more important than offense. You can score a lot of runs, but if you give up a lot too, it will hurt your seed heading into playoffs. With six teams advancing to the Gold Bracket, only the 1st and 2nd Seeds had byes to the Semifinal round. This left two of the four undefeated teams with an extra game in playoffs.
The OC Breakers Red were one of those teams. Entering Sunday as the 3rd Seed, they played their first playoff game against their teammates from the same program, the OC Breakers Blue. With the Breakers Red coming out on top 6-1, they advanced to the semifinal game.
Up against the 2nd Seed, they Breakers Red kept their undefeated weekend alive with a 9-4 victory to move to the Championship game.
Now facing the 1st Seed Mavericks, the Breakers Red had their work cut out for them. The Mavericks had only given up 5 runs in their previous 4 games. Despite that impressive run, the Breakers Red jumped all over the Maverick pitching, putting up 12 runs, winning their third game of the day, and taking home 1st Place.
Thank you to all the teams that played in the Frozen Fury. Here is a list of the Champions and Runner Ups.
See you on the fields
