Frozen Fury Recap - February 27th, 2013

The tournament may have been the Frozen Fury, but California weather prevailed once again (and I don't mind in the slightest).  Giving us warm temperatures all weekend and a little bit of wind on Sunday, the weather was the perfect backdrop for the baseball being played.

Huntington Beach Sports Complex:
Saturday's games in Huntington Beach provided some of the closest games I have ever seen in a day of a tournament.  Ten games were played on Saturday, six of them were won by just 1 run, two games by 4 runs, only one mercy (which was a 3-1 game until the top of the 6th), and a tie.  Because of this, Sunday's games in both the 11-Under Blue and the 13-Under Blue were well within reach of any team, despite whatever seed they were.

11-Under Blue:
BPA DeMarini entered Sunday as the 4th Seed, despite scoring the most runs on Saturday.  Looking to avenge their 9-8 loss on Saturday, they won their quarter final game to advance to face the 1st Seed.  Continuing to swing their bats from Saturday, they upset the 1st Seed 9-5 to advance to the Championship game.

In the Semifinal game on the other side of the bracket, BWC and Westside Hawks were having a slugfest.  BWC was up 4-3 heading into the top of the 6th Inning, when the Westside Hawks scored 5 runs, giving them a 8-4 lead.  Not letting that break their spirits, BWC came back with 5 runs of their own in the bottom of the 6th, giving them a 9-8 victory, and took them to the Championship.

With the wind finally dying down for the Championship game, BWC jumped out to a 6-3 lead.  BPA would find their bats in the bottom of the 4th Inning, putting up 4 runs to take a 7-6 lead.  They cushioned their lead in the bottom of the 5th inning with 3 more runs, putting the score at 10-6.  DeMarini shut down BWC in the top of the 6th, giving them the victory on their long and windy Sunday.

13-Under Blue:
The OCBA Colts had a very tough Saturday.  Going 0-2 in Pool Play, they lost both games by just a single run.  They obviously had no problems competing with the other teams, and they showed this on Sunday.  They scored 14 runs in their Quarterfinal win, and another 10 runs in a semifinal upset of the 1st Seed.  Advancing to the finals, they would have to face the Diamond Trained Jaxx, who handed them a 5-4 loss on Saturday.

The Diamond Trained Jaxx jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after the 1st Inning and the Colts (now on their third game of the day), were unable to get their bats awake for a third straight game.  They were only able to put one more run across the play, with the final score being 4-2 in favor of the Jaxx.

12-Under Red and 13-Under Red:
Without question, the Phenom program has produced some of the best teams in the country.  This weekend, they proved that that was the case across two divisions.  Going undefeated in the weekend, the 12-Under and 13-Under teams outscored opponents by a total of 93-15 across their 8 games.  Both teams easily clinched first place trophies.

Thank you to all the teams that played on this windy February weekend.  Here are list of Champions and Runner-Ups:

See you on the fields
