Surf City Shootout Weekly Recap

Sold out weeks in advance, the Surf City Shootout in Huntington Beach was a healthy mix of local Orange County teams and inland teams looking to do anything to beat the heat of our dry California Summer.

9-Under:
The Los Al Combat had a stellar debut tournament.  Winning the first game of the tournament against HB Total Baseball, they would find themselves facing HB Total Baseball yet again in the final game of the tournament.

Bolstered by solid pitching up and down the lineup, Combat was able to let their bats do the talking, scoring 50 runs in their four games to kick of their 2015 season the right way, with a 1st Place finish.

10-Under:
The 10-Under LA Xtreme were also playing in their first tournament of the year.  After going 1-1 in Pool Play, they entered the Playoffs as the 3rd Seed.  Landon Penney, who was the losing pitcher in Pool Play, rebounded incredibly, allowing just one run and helping the Xtreme move onto the Semi Finals.

Now facing the 2nd Seed So Cal Smoke and Fire, the team that beat them on Saturday, the Xtreme put the fresh arm of Vincent Langdon on the hill.  Langdon had yet to throw in the tournament, and coupled with an inning from David Chase, the Xtreme were able to stifle the Smoke and Fire hitters to just 3 runs, securing the upset and payback to push them into the finals.

In the Championship, they found themselves against the undefeated NLB Waves.  Now on their third game of the day, the Xtreme bats were starting to cool off, but the pitching and defense was as solid as ever, holding the hard hitting Waves to just three runs, giving the Xtreme all the room they needed to take a 6-3 lead to a Championship victory.

11-Under:
After a stellar 2-Run complete game by Jagger Wiesen, the Laguna Niguel Lightning ran into the eventual 1st Seed Orange County Kings.  Playing them hard, the Lightning fell 4-1.  They advanced to the Gold Bracket of the playoffs as the 3rd Seed.  After hard nailed pitching performance by Donovan Dopf, the Lightning moved on to the Championship game, where they would yet again face the Kings.

In a game that played out very similar to the first one, the Lightning were able to get the upper hand.  With yet another fantastic pitching performance, they held the Kings to just 2 runs, giving the Lightning a 4-2 victory, and the Championship.

12-Under:
Sometimes the road to the Championship is easy and straight.  Other times, it's tough and winding.  The SB Spikes took the tough road to the Championship.  After losing both games on Saturday, they entered the Playoffs as the 5th Seed.  However, where they struggled on Saturday, they would thrive on Sunday.  They only scored three total runs in Pool Play, but in their first game on Sunday, they put up 15 to advance to the Semifinals.  Not slowing down, they scored 11 more in the Semifinals pushing them to the Championship game.

Now running short on pitching, their bats would have to stay hot to get them a victory.  They gave up 8 runs, but plated 9 of their own, giving them the epic come from behind playoff run to a 1st Place finish.

13-Under:
The Iron Pigs, an All Star team carrying over into the new season of Travel Ball, started their first tournament of the year off with a bump.  Facing the home town HB Toros, they lost 10-2 in Pool Play.  Going to the playoffs as the 3rd Seed, they quickly won their semifinal game 12-4, moving them to the Championship, and giving them a rematch with the HB Toros.  With the Championship on the line, the Iron Pigs were able to jump out to an early lead.  The Toros pushed hard in the final inning, but the Pigs held them off, giving them an 8-5 Championship victory in their first tournament.

Thank you to all the teams that played.  Here is a list of the Champions and Runner Ups.

See you on the fields
