Mercury Recap - August 20th, 2013

The first tournaments of the new season are an adventure into the unknown for a lot of teams.  Some teams moving up in age have to contend with bigger field sizes, while others are just getting their feet wet in the travel baseball world.  Scores wind up being a bit lopsided for a couple tournaments as teams find their footing and get comfortable with each other.  We've had teams that have gone from getting mercied every game to winning tournaments in just a few short months.

10-Under:
The South Bay Swarm had no trouble adjusting to the new season.  Only playing in a couple tournaments last year, they regrouped themselves, and scored a whopping 59 runs in 4 games, giving up only 19 in their undefeated Championship weekend.

11-Under:
The SGV Hustle had a slight advantage going into the new season.  Towards the end of last season as a 10-Under team, they played up to an 11-Under tournament, giving them a feel for a the bigger field.  It must have helped, because they scored 54 runs in 4 games, while holding opponents to just 4 total runs.

12-Under:
The Pomona Titans program is one of our most consistent participants in our program.  Fresh off their 2nd Place finish in the 11-Under AA World Series, they didn't waste any time getting back to work.  They outscored their opponents 38-1 in Pool Play before running into their first snag of the tournament.  In the Championship game, they faced a team they had beat 13-1 in the first game of the day.  The Championship Game didn't not go quite as smoothly.  Giving up 4 runs (more than they gave up in the previous three games combined), they would have dig to keep their undefeated streak alive, and dig they did.  In what turned out to be a closer game than they would have cared for, they walked away with a 5-4 Championship Victory.

13-Under:
The 13-Under was the most evenly matched division of the weekend.  Quite often in four team brackets, Sunday's Pool Play games become formalities with the Top 2 Seeds already determined.  This was not the case.  With two teams at 1-1 and one team at 1-0-1, wins were as crucial as ever.  Kennedy Baseball Academy won 9-4 in their first game on Sunday, sending them to the finals as the top seed with a 2-0-1 record.

Facing the Pomona Titans for the second time in the weekend, Kennedy was looking to repeat.  Their first encounter a hitters game, with 20 runs scored in the game, Kennedy came out on top 12-8.  The two teams hit again, and the Titans were unable prevent the same outcome.  Kennedy took home 1st Place with a 8-6 victory.

Thank you to all the teams that played in the Mercury.  Here is a list of the Champions and Runner Ups.

See you on the fields
