October is traditionally the month of wet weather, and cancelled tournaments, but the drought has brought us clear skies and high temperatures. There was no escaping the heat this weekend, on and off the field.
9-Under:
After an 8-0 win to send them into the Championship game, the Riverside Riot had to face the always dangers Caira's Black Dogs in a double header to win 1st Place.
At this point in the long, hot weekend, pitching was getting a bit thin, and while both teams did their best on the mounds, it was the bats that ruled this game. With every ball finding some space in the outfield, the runs piled up for both teams.
Though not as cut and dry as the 8-0 victory that sent them to the Championship, the Riot held on for a wild 16-13 Championship victory in their first tournament of the Season.
10-Under:
Heading into the Oktoberfest with an undefeated record, the Bat Rays looked to continue their strong 2015 Season.
Winning two close games in Pool Play, the Bat Rays moved on to the Playoffs as the 3rd Seed. In their first game of the Playoffs, their bats were slow to wake up, but a stellar pitching performance from Caleb Milanes held the Scrappers to just 1 run, letting Bat Rays move on with a 3-1 victory.
Their bats woke up for the second game of the Playoffs. Giving up six runs could have been devastating, but they scored 8 of their own, taking an 8-6 victory to the Championship game.
Now facing the Rox Gray for the second time in the weekend, they looked to have a repeat of their 5-2 victory on Saturday. Now with both teams low on pitching, the game would be decided at the plate. The Rox jumped all over the Bat Rays pitching, plating 8 runs. It would not be enough to slow down the hot Bat Rays though. Sending 9 players across the plate, the Bat Rays took a 9-8 victory to their second 1st Place finish in as many tournaments.
11-Under Upper:
The OC Smash have been a staple in the USSSA program for the last five years. In that time they've produced quality teams that have had success on the field, but also produce great coaches, parents, and personalities off the field.
After going 2-0 in Pool Play, they advanced to the Gold Bracket as the 2nd Seed. Three different pitchers did what they had to do for the Smash to let their bats squeak out a 9-8 semifinal win to advance to the Championship.
Onto the Championship game, they found themselves against an energized 5th Seed, Downey Dirt Devils. While the Dirt Devils didn't slow down at the plate, their third game of the day saw their pitching falter. The Smash were able to do as their team name suggests, and smash in 9 more runs, giving them a 9-7 Championship, and their second 1st Place finish this season.
Thank you to all the teams that played in the 2014 Oktoberfest. Here are your Champions and Runner Ups.
See you on the fields
